Friday Meme - What HASN'T Worked for You?

This Friday’s meme at Heart of the Matter asks, “What hasn’t worked for you?” Below are a few things that haven’t worked in our home.

  • Chocolate hasn’t worked for me. I get headaches from a single m&m.
  • Caffeine hasn’t worked for me. I've never had so much as a single sip of coffee. My beverage of choice is NingXia Red, the highest antioxidant drink on the market.
  • Insomnia doesn’t work for me. I take ¼ of an ImmuPro tablet, a natural Young Living supplement, each night before bed.
  • Canned curriculum hasn’t worked for us. We prefer to pick and choose, eclectic style.
  • The homeschool coop didn’t work for Scooter. We tried one lapbooking class two falls ago. Though Scooter had a wonderful teacher and learned a lot about state history through lapbooking, the 20+ student class reminded him too much of traditional school and he didn’t enjoy it.
  • Most textbooks and workbooks don’t work for us. We use some workbooks for math and handwriting, but try to limit those in our homeschool as our boys don’t learn best that way.
  • Video games don’t work for us. For now, my hubby and I decided not to have video games in our home. The boys use computer software such as Mavis Beacon to learn typing skills, but we don’t use video games as time fillers in our home.
  • Sitting for long periods of time doesn’t work for us. We take several breaks during our school day and rarely sit for more than an hour (and usually less) at a time.
  • Having Mom do everything doesn’t work for us. We’ve included the boys in household chores and other activities to keep them occupied and develop lifelong skills.
  • Schooling year-round doesn’t work for us. We take a summer break, as we all seem to need it.

What hasn’t worked for you?

interesting post Morning Rose

oh i am sori you get headaches from chocolate - its one of my favourite foods along with nuts - dont eat it too much i am conscious of my weight

oh i like coffee and have 2 in the morning to get me going

we are eclectic too where do you get your curriculum from?

we dont use video games either

i believe children should get up and have breaks and do hands on stuff regularly. Theres been studies done that say that children cant concentrate for more than about 45 to 60 minutes.

I believe its good for children to pull their weight around the house. I see families as team members where each one contributes to the success of the team. Besides which it teaches them responsibility and life skills. I believe both boys and girls should know how to cook, wash their clothes and keep their spaces clean and tidy.

The New Zealand school year is broken into 4 terms and we follow this. Although at this time we are allowing the flexibility of home schooling to help us. As you know their were illness in the family so we had our 1st week of the holidays earlier than the schools. Have home schooled this week when everybody else is on holiday and then next week we will on holiday when everyone else is too.

enjoyed reading and responding to your post
have a good weekend my friend

Jen - Thanks for your comments. In the past we've gotten most of our curriculum from the Moore Foundation (www.moorefoundation.com), though as we homeschool longer we find many of our resources at the public library.

I had written a post about what we use in our homeschooling, which you can find at the following link:

Hope that helps!

How sad about chocolate! How about an M&M laced with Tylenol? LOL!

I am glad Homeschooling isn't one size fits all!

Thanks for sharing!

Tracy - Someone suggested something similar in the past. :) The funny thing is, I don't miss chocolate, though I used to be able to eat it. Thanks for stopping by!

AAACCCKKK! No Chocolate...No Caffeine? How does one homeshcool without those two vital ingredients? :)

Just kidding, of course!

This meme is doing a good job of highlighting why each homeschool family needs to follow their own lead rather than try to fit someone else's mold.

It's so important to know those things about one's home.

Good for you to say it doesn't work for mom to do everything! Amen to that!

I agree with the breaks. My dd can't go on one subject for longer than 15-20 minutes and we can't jump right into another subject without a break. Sometimes that makes our day longer and a little harder on me, but it seems to work for her.

Blessings,
